Car Seat Installation Errors That Are Easy to Miss
Studies of car seat checks find that more than half of seats are installed with at least one critical error. Even careful parents miss small mistakes that sharply reduce protection in a crash.
Sweep for the most common errors.
- The seat should move no more than an inch side to side
- Harness straps must be at or below the shoulders rear-facing
- The seat belt or LATCH must be locked and tight
- Nothing thicker than a finger should fit under the straps
After installing, do the inch test and re-check weekly. A seat that loosens over time is the silent failure most parents never notice.
After a professional check, most parents are surprised by how much a small adjustment changes the install. The inch test is the same one technicians use, and it catches the errors that photos miss.
