Nipple Flow Rates: Matching the Bottle to the Baby
Bottle nipples come in numbered flow rates, and using the wrong one can cause gulping, gas, or frustration. The right flow lets the baby drink comfortably without working too hard or choking.
Match the flow to the feeding.
- Slow flow is for newborns who are still learning
- Move up only when the baby seems frustrated or tired
- Fast flow is for older babies taking larger feeds
- Watch for dripping when the bottle is tipped, a sign to size down
Flow rate is not a race to the top. The baby who feeds calmly on a slower nipple is getting exactly what they need, so let their cues set the pace.
A nipple that flows too fast can overwhelm a baby and cause the very gas and fussiness parents are trying to avoid. Matching the flow to the baby’s pace is a small change with a big payoff.
