Introducing Allergens Early: The New Guidance
The old advice to delay common allergens has been reversed. Introducing peanut, egg, and other allergens early, around six months, is now linked to a lower risk of food allergy later.
Introduce carefully and consistently.
- Start with one allergen at a time in a soft, safe form
- Offer it at home where you can watch for a reaction
- Keep offering tolerated foods regularly to maintain tolerance
- Check with the pediatrician if there is a family allergy history
Early and often is the new rule for most babies. A small taste introduced the right way can prevent a lifetime of avoidance.
The research on early allergen introduction has changed pediatric guidance in the last decade. Offering those foods early, in a safe form, is now seen as a protective step rather than a risk.
